What Is Education Really Worth?

We all know what education costs

“So many people know the price of everything, but the value of nothing.” This quote comes from Elina Valtonen, the Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs, describing the current political climate. But it could just as easily be copy-pasted into today’s education system. We – teachers, parents, school leaders, and yes, EdTech entrepreneurs – all know what good education costs: private school fees, special support, additional tutoring, the latest AI gadget. Budgets are tight, time moves fast, and tests don’t wait. And yes, the strongest currency for a bright future still seems to be high grades. And grades come with a price.

What is the value for students?

But are we actually looking at the value – not for us, but for the students? What value does this pressure-driven optimization race have for them? None. Only a price paid in anxiety, depression, lack of confidence, and school absenteeism. I know these prices by heart and by experience. I have four children, and there is hardly a day when we don’t deal with at least one of them, often paid for with tears. Sometimes with exhaustion that has nothing to do with learning and everything to do with coping. Talking to family, friends, and fellow parents, bravely admitting that we are struggling, it becomes clear that my kids are not a rare exception. It seems we are becoming the new normal.

I see the same pattern in my professional life

The value–price discussion doesn’t stop where my private life ends. It shapes my daily work as the founder of a learning platform. School success is still measured in grades, not in learning skills. The value of real learning – where failure is not seen as a declaration of bankruptcy but as a long-term investment – is still not publicly traded. It remains a niche product, with a massively underestimated value.

So if you are still with me and dared to read this short list of thoughts, you are probably brave enough to ask the next question: What educational value are you investing in? As a parent, as a school leader, and as an EdTech entrepreneur.

Let’s continue the conversation. The value of an exchange between like-minded people aiming to make a difference? Priceless.

And to Elina Valtonen: thank you for this powerful quote.
